When most people think of spring, they think of spring break travel or taking time off for fun-filled vacations with family. And while there’s nothing like the joy of a great spring vacation, this may not always be doable. Be it work, school or our otherwise busy schedules, the obligations of life can sometimes make it difficult to achieve our dreams of traveling.

But don’t let your wanderlusting heart be troubled. After all, adventures are not only found in a foreign country or on the shores of a tropical beach – they can be found anywhere, even in your own backyard! So for those of you who may not be able to take a vacation, here’s 10 ways you can make your own spring adventures, without traveling far.

Take a day trip to a local city.

Get out of town for the day and drive to a nearby city that’s close enough to visit for a day trip, but far enough away that you don’t go often. Plan what you’d like do, where you’d like eat, and what you’d like to see – or just arrive and let adventure find you. Either way, it’s a great change of scenery and a chance to explore somewhere unfamiliar to you.

Get your hike on.

Find out where the local trails are and get hiking! There’s nothing like spending time in the great outdoors, and you may be surprised to see what amazing views and gorgeous scenery you can find so close to home. Be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes, a water bottle and some trail mix.

Picnic with your bestie.

Invite a friend or significant other to a picnic. Pack a delicious homemade lunch and lay down a blanket or snag a picnic table at a sunny spot at a local park. Spend the day catching up and maybe toss around a Frisbee for even more fun.

Discover a new, hole-in-the-wall eatery.

Part of the travel experience is finding new places to eat – so why not do that in your hometown? Find a local, hole-in-the-wall eatery that you’ve never been to and go there to eat. Bonus points if you pick something off the menu that you’ve never tried before.

Drive out to the middle of nowhere.

Take an aimless drive out of town and travel down roads just to see where they lead. You may discover great places you never knew existed. Just make sure you bring a GPS so you can figure out how to get back home!

Go camping.

If you’re the outdoorsy type, go with a group of friends to a local campground, pitch tents and spend the night camping. Bonfires, scary stories, and s’mores are encouraged.

Spend a day at the shore or lake.

Weather permitting, strap on your favorite beachy sandals and spend a day by relaxing by the waters of a lake or beach (depending on which is closest to you). Be sure to wear your swimsuit if it’s warm enough to take a dip.

Have an adventure with OTBT Shoes this spring!

Sit outside and read.

Drag a chair or blanket outside (or better yet, a hammock) and kick back to get started on that book you’ve been meaning to read. Immerse yourself in the thrill of your novel while you bask in the spring sun. Don’t forget sunscreen.

Make plans with a new friend.

Met someone new recently? Make plans to hang out and get to know them even more. Go do an activity you both enjoy or just spend some time getting lunch and talking. Making connections and learning more about the people in your life is always a great use of time.

Invite an out-of-town friend to stay for the weekend.

Just because you can’t travel very far doesn’t mean that someone else can’t. Invite an out-of-town friend you haven’t seen in a while to come spend the weekend with you. This gives you an opportunity to catch up and show them around town. And you may even start to see your hometown differently through their eyes.

If you seek adventure this spring, you don’t need to look to far off places or week-long vacations. Adventure and fun can be found right in your own backyard, if you know where to look and you’re feeling creative. In the end, it’s about seeking out new places, trying new things and making new memories with new (or old) friends.
